Welcome to Barishal. It is one of the 6 divisions of Bangladesh. It is located in the southwestern part of the country. Barisal city is also named as Venice of the east.

Introduction:

Barisal is one of the most beautiful cities in Bangladesh. Chandradwip is the ancient name of this town built on the banks of the river Kirtankhola. Barisal is a major source of food grain production in the country. It is the oldest and second-largest and most important river port in the country. There are 12 rivers and 13 canals in Barisal. Bangladesh is a riverine country. The whole country is covered by its rivers like a net. There are notable rivers in Barisal- Kirtankhola, Meghla, Dhansindri etc. Barisal has 14 thanas and 10 Upazilas. There are almost two thousand government and non-government organizations.

Shankar Monastery:

Location of Shankar Monastery in the new market area of Barisal city. Swami Pragyanananda Saraswati established this ashram called Sri Sri Shankar Monastery in 1912.

Bibi Pukur( pond):

Bibi Pukur is a traditional pond located in the heart of Barisal city. After reaching the launch ghat or bus stand in Barisal, you can take a rickshaw to see the Bibi pond on the east side of the city’s Sadar Road.

Miyabari Jame Mosque

Miyabari Jame Mosque at Korapur in Barisal city is one of the oldest mosques in Barisal district. He built this mosque in the 16th century. The Mosque is located at a distance of about 9 km from Chaumatha adjacent to Hatem Ali College of Barisal.

Lakutia zamindar’s house:

There is a historical zamindar house located in Lakutia village in Barishal. Lakutia zamindar Bari was built in the 16th or 17th century. There is a two-storied palace for living. There is also a monastery, dighi and field.

Floating Guava Market:

It is Located at Kuriana Bazar in Barisal city. Usually, July and August’s months are known as Guava season but sometimes the market lasts till September. The market is crowded till 11 am. You have to float in the water to market.

Shapla(water lilies) village, Salta:

Shapla village of Barisal city is like a Shapla state. Water lilies are cultivated in 10 thousand acres of wetlands. About 80% of the residents of Shapla village are involved in Shapla cultivation and Shapla marketing.

Koloshkathi zamindar Palace:

Koloshkathi zamindar house is 3 km away from Bakerganj. Barisal is located in Bakerganj Upazila. Koloshkathi is an ancient town. You can go to this zamindar Palace at Kalsakathi Bazar by motorcycle rickshaw or van after crossing Sahebganj ferry in Bakerganj Upazila Sadar.

Kasba Mosque, Gournadi:

Kasba Mosque in Barisal city is located in Kasba village in Gournadi Upazila. It is also one of the traditional mosques of Barisal. You can get off at the Torki port bus stand on foot or by rickshaw to go to the Kasba Mosque, Gournadi.

Mazar of Hazrat Mallik Dut Kumar Shah (R):

You can get off at the Torki port bus stand in Barisal city and walk to the shrine of Hazrat Mallik Dut Kumar Shah (R).

Ulania zamindar Palace:

A Chowdhury house located in Ulania village of Barisal city which is known as zamindar Palace. It is a 16th century’s traditional zamindar Palace.

Choramaddi Mungakhan Jame Mosque:

By the newly constructed Bhola Road at Bakerganj in Barisal district, one can go to the Choramaddi Mungakhan Jame Mosque. The mosque is modelled on Mughal architecture. The mosque was built under the inspiration of a wealthy businessman named Munga Khan.

Chandshi Ishwar Chandra High School:

Chandshi Ishwar Chandra Secondary School is located in Barisal district.

Hijal swamp of Safipur union:

You have to go down to Safipur in Barisal district. Distance from Muladi to hijal swamp is 35 km.

Oxford Mission School:

This Oxford Mission Church is located on Bogra Road in Barisal city. To go from Barisal city to Oxford Mission area CNG, autorickshaws and rickshaws can be used.

Guthia Mosque:

You will reach to the Uzirpur Upazila as soon as you reach Barisal-Banaripara road. Changuria village of Guthia is beside the side of this road. There is a huge mosque in the south part.

Durgasagar:

Durgasagar Dighi is located at a distance of 12 km from Barisal city.

Kirtankhola river:

Barisal Naval Port is located on the banks of the river Kirtankhola, which is the second largest river port in Bangladesh.
