Muktagachha Thana was established in 1981. Muktagachha Thana became an upazila in 1983. The most popular proverb about naming this upazila is known as Muktaram proverb. It is said that in the middle of the eighteenth century, the famous zamindar of Bogra, Sri Krishna Acharya, bought a large zamindari in an area now known as Muktagachha. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, Sri Krishna Acharya Chowdhury’s sons, Rama Rama, Hare Rama, Vishnuram and Shivram, took a boat to visit the new zamindari of his father at the Rajghat on the Ayman River. The locals saw a huge fleet and rushed to the spot. Such a big boat and such a huge arrival they have never seen before. When the curious locals found out that there were children of zamindar Sri Krishna Acharya in the incoming fleet, the villagers arranged to welcome the guests.

The zamindar could not afford to welcome the sons with proper subtext. However, there was no shortage of their will. Seeing the situation strange, a tenant named Muktaram Karmakar offered a huge tree made of brass at the feet of the zamindar’s sons. Pleased with Muktaram’s generosity, Rama gave him a huge taluk and announced the name of the area as Muktagachha by adding the given tree to the name of Muktaram Karmakar. From then on, the area became known to the public as Muktagachha.
