The first thana headquarters was established here in 1867 AD. Before naming Mymensingh, the area was called Nasirabad. In the fifteenth century, Sultan Hassan Shah occupied the area and appointed his son Nasiruddin Nasrat Shah as ruler. The area was named Nasirabad after Nasiruddin Nasrat Shah. After the death of Nasrat Shah, Mamen Shah, a Tbdiya, was appointed governor of the Umrah Nasirabad area. The area was named Memenshahi after the ruler Memenshah. The present Mymensingh name is a variant of the word Memenshahi. According to another legend, the area was named Mymensingh after Mansingh, one of the generals of Emperor Akbar.
