Gaebindaganj Thana was established in 1975 along the rivers Karateya, Bangali, Nalua and Gangni. Gabindaganj Thana was upgraded to an upazila in 1982. There are several legends about naming Gaebindaganj. The naming of the idols of the independent kings of North Bengal, Bhima and Gavinda Deva, is associated with proverbs. Saja Bhima once placed a statue of Gavinda Deva on the banks of the river Karateya. A huge ganj was built around the temple of Gavinda Dev. Ganj is named after the deity.
