Separated from the then Bakerganj, Madaripur subdivision was formed in 1854 and Gopalganj thana was formed in Madaripur subdivision in 1872. One year later, in 1873, Madaripur subdivision was added from Bakerganj district to Faridpur district. In 1909 Madaripur subdivision was dissolved and Gopalganj subdivision was formed. Gopalganj subdivision was upgraded to a district on 1 February 1984. It was formerly a subdivision of Faridpur district.
