Journey to the present Gopalganj city centred on the Madhumati river. Separated from Bakerganj at that time, Madaripur subdivision was formed in 1854 and Gopalganj thana in 1872. One year later, in 1873, Madaripur subdivision was added from Bakerganj district to Faridpur district. In 1909, Madaripur subdivision was dissolved and Gopalganj subdivision was formed. Gopalganj subdivision was upgraded to a district on 1 February 1984. It was formerly a subdivision of Faridpur district.
